I’m a mid-level movie snob. Outside of football, movies are my second favorite thing to watch. I’m going to be up front and honest that I don’t love the Academy Awards, because I’m not the biggest fan of many of the cultural elements involved in Hollywood’s grandest display of pomp; nonetheless, I do pay for movies and enjoy many of them, and I find no issue with either watching the awards ceremony or making your own picks for the awards. I have not seen every movie nominated, so if there is a big name movie I have not seen-I’ll make note of that. Also, I’m going to make my own pick and then the pick I actually expect to win. I reserve the right to skip certain categories and awards.
Best Original Screenplay: My pick is “First Reformed,” what I expect to win is “Roma.” *** Roma is predicted to win a few awards tonight and I have not seen this movie.
Visual Effects: My pick is “Avengers: Infinity War,” and I expect “First Man” to win.
Best Music (Original Song): I’d be shocked if “Shallow” by Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper did not win, and it probably should.
Best Music (Original Score): I also expect “Black Panther” to win, and I think it will be well deserved.
Film Editing: This one is actually a hard choice, but “Vice” was pretty well done so that’s my choice. I could see the Academy choosing either “Blackkklansman” or “Vice.”
Directing: I thought Spike Lee’s film was pretty incredible, so I would give it to him, but I don’t think they will and instead Alfonso Cuaron will win.
Cinematagrophy: Roma will win this too from what everyone seems to believe. Again, I have not seen the movie so how would I know?
Animation: Let’s not kid ourselves here; the last animated movie I saw was probably “The Land Before Time 4.” Let me just take a shot in the dark and say “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse” will win.
Best Actress in a supporting role: I thought Amy Adams was pretty great, but everyone has raved about Regina King’s performance in “If Beale Street Could Talk,” so expect that to win tonight.
Best Actor in a supporting role: Man, Sam Elliott deserves to win this, but he won’t– Mahershala Ali will win another Oscar.
Best Actress in a leading role: From what I’ve read, Glenn Close is the front-runner. I’ll admit that I really do not know who should win in this category.
Actor in a leading role: A lot of people thought Christian Bale should win, but I do not. He looked amazing, but it’s not even his best acting gig of his career (Fighter was amazing). Willem Dafoe is one of my favorite actors of all time and I would not be surprised at all if he won. But, my pick would be Rami Malek.
Best Picture: Let me say up front that I have not seen “Roma,” “The Favorite,” or “Green Book.” My opinion is controversial, but I think Black Panther should win. It’s controversial because most people don’t believe Superhero movies should win these sorts of awards, but this was a special movie. I bet if it would have been released later it would be getting a lot more buzz. There are a lot of worthy movies in this category; Blackkklansman is another very worthy winner. Movie critics seem to be in agreement that Roma should win tonight.
There’s my picks! Let’s see how many I get right. Tomorrow you may say I’m a genius, but it’s probably just as likely that I eat a lot of crow. Oh well, it’s all just for fun!
